hehe I had to keep the winner quiet for over a week, it was v.difficult!! I'd be interested to see if you guys think the audience chose the right winner though. Although I persoanlly didn't vote for David Seaman - I voted for Carol Smillie and my brother voted for Jessica Taylor!

I think Jessica should have won she showed more attitude!

Whilst I agree the man has the more difficult job, in that he has to lead, the male celebs do have to try and achieve that bit more, however, David did have quite a lot of prior experience.  For me, the BBC were more concerned about bringing in a replacement for Paul, and that meant they had to choose someone who had prior experience, and who therefore could look passable on the ice after just 9 days training.

With Jessica however, I think she achieved a lot, and I also think that the learning curve that she travelled on in her 4 weeks of training, was greater than David's.

So, for me, she deserved to win on that basis.

I have this bug bear with SCD at the moment, where we the public are being asked to judge apples and pears, rather than just apples or just pears.

Another thing to note here was the make up of the judges.  This occasion there were 3 out of 4 of them that were ice skaters, yet on SCD, we have only one ballroom dancer amongst them.  I know that the argument has been used that the content of the panel makes the competitors try harder, and take more risks, but i do not agree.  It is like saying that when students sit an English examination, one of the examiners involved should have studied English, but anyone else involved in the process just needs to be able to read!

If specialist skills and knowledge are needed in the ice dancing competition, why does the same principle not apply in SCD, particularly as in Tess' words (though I don't agree) ice dancing and ballroom dancing are very similar?

Well I think that an important part of dancing is choreography, so having choreographers on the panel is kind of relevant to what they are having to mark. In ice dancing it is slightly more technical. I'm not sure if they actually said it on the TV programme but certainly they said to the audience that all the ice dances had to have certain elements - a lift, a triple rotation, and a combined sequence of a number of different 'elements', so perhaps that's why the judges have to have more technical knowledge.

I agree with Monica, Jessica should have won.  It was a much better routine with more content.  Another wrong decision down to the voting system again I think!

I also think Jessica should have won, she was fantastic on the ice, and it wasn't just all her partner making her look good either.

I was impressed with David though, he did a great job, but again obviously had a reasonable amount of prior experience.

I think Jessica should have won, she made more progress and had to learn to trust her partner and virtually learn from scratch so she did a lot better

I almost voted for Jessica - but I really enjoyed Carol Smillie's dance and the music and everything so I voted for her!

In SCD an equal balance between ballroom and choreography would be acceptable.  having 3 choreographers allows for the interpretation of the musicality to be understood, but the more technical aspects of the dance are not given the same opportunity.

In SID, somehow the technical aspects took precedence, so we had 3 out of 4 technical judges; still think that that balance is wrong too.

So what are some people saying, that the technical aspects of SCD are less important than the choreography? funny that, I understood that the people who came in the top two, were there because they were technically better than the rest.

I thought SCD was more about the "total package"??

I.e. techinality, choreography, personality, performance AND just whether the judges like them or not (bad aspect of judging!, especially favouritism!)

By the way, Monica you sound so clever although sometimes your posts are so well worded I don't understand them heehee!

The thing is though that Craig and Arlene do have some technical knowledge (especially Arlene) - they know pretty much all the technical names of the steps. Also, there is more freedom in normal dancing because in fact the dancers don't have to put ANY basic steps in a dance if they choose not to, whereas the ice skaters do have to have certain elements in it.

I think maybe it would have been better to have two technical judges and two artistic judges but don't think they should change it now, because after all who would be the one to leave? It can't be Bruno he's so sweet! I think all four judges are cool and would hate it if one of them was replaced!!

Sarah I hear what you are saying, but no one is indispensable - that is the way of the world.  I would have no problem with any change in the format of the judges, as much as I like all of them, particularly Len.  It happens in the real world, there is no reason for it to be any different on SCD.  In fact, each of the judges in turn, try each week to 'make a name for themself' and it is all based on self preservation.  it is the natural order of things.

Yeah I thought it was way too short and you could't really warm to any of them because you didn't get to "know" them like on SCD. Maybe they should have shown longer traing clips...

But that Holiday on Ice thing was WELL GOOD!!! Wow!

Thanks Lornie! It was great to wtch the show on tv, even though I was in it I found it relly amusing to watch and I'd have been glued to it even if I hadn't competed. I think all the couples did a great job as it was a very hard job to learn to skate a routine in such a short time. Everyone was fantastic AND  nobody fell over!! Marcus was a great person to work with and he tried his best through all the training and on the night but it was very nerve wracking on the night for all the couples as they had never performed in front of so many people. Congratulations to all the couples and fingers crossed for another special next Xmas!! xx

Thanks again Lornie. Glad you enjoyed the show. Are you an ice skater or a dancer yourself?

By the way, the Holiday on Ice number was excellent, in fact it was better in the studio than it came across on telly. For your information, myself, Daniel Whiston and Oula Jaaskelainen can be found performing in Blackpool at the Hot Ice Show from March 25th 2005 for the summer season if anyone is interested in coming along to watch! xx

Yes I was in the studio too and the Holiday on Ice bit was excellent and it was cut down a lot which is a shame. P.S I thought your performance was great Leigh and you were marked very harshly!!

No... I don't ice skate, only with my friends and stuff we used to go all the time in the Xmas holidays but the ice rink closed down

I am starting dancing in January (yay!) and I used to do ballet and tap when I was a bit younger.

thanks sarah! I thought that we were marked a bit harshly too but then the judges had to be nasty to somebody and it was myself and marcus and also rowland and charlotte that bore the brunt of it but it was easier for them to pick on us as we had the hardest job! It was much more difficult for the girl to skate with the male celeb! I think everyone did a great job though there was no-one that let themselves down. It was a fantastic experience and my only hope is that I can be involved in it again in the future. xx

I hope you will be involved in it too! Can I just ask were you scared when Marcus was lifting you (esp. that overhead one) because I would be terrified if someone who had only been skating for 4 weeks lifted me like that!!!

I'd be terrified if someone who had been ice skating for 14 years had lifted me like that!

I thought everyone did exceedingly well.....I know if i tried to do that I think I would end up falling flat on my face!!!! Leigh, what did you think about Craig Revel-Horwood being one of the judges...do u think it was fair he was there or do you think they all should have been ice-dance experts?
